A curable aqueous composition is provided to produce an aqueous thermosetting binder having high flexibility at a lower cost without showing environmental harmfulness of formaldehyde, as compared with phenol/formaldehyde resins. A curable aqueous composition includes (a) at least one polycarboxy polymer or copolymer comprising at least two carboxylic acid groups, anhydride groups, or salts thereof, and (b) at least one glycerol derivative which has a weight average molecular weight greater than 1000, comprises at least three hydroxyl groups, and is selected from the group comprising ethoxylated and propoxylated glycerols of the following formula. A ratio of the number of equivalents of the carboxylic acid groups, anhydride groups, or salts thereof to the number of equivalents of the hydroxyl groups is from 1/0.001 to 1/1. |
