A system for determining the application of an adaptive filter and a method thereof are provided to enhance an S/N(Signal to Noise) ratio on PPG(Photoplethysmography) signals by determining whether or not an adaptive filtering operation is applied based on the PPG signals and acceleration signals. A system for determining the application of an adaptive filter includes a signal sensing unit, an adaptive filter unit(140), and an adaptive filter application determining unit(130). The signal sensing unit senses a detection signal. The adaptive filter unit filters adaptively the sensed signal. The adaptive filter application determining unit analyzes the sensed signal and the filtered signal, and determines whether or not an adaptive filter unit is applied on the sensed signal based on the analyzed result.
