This invention provides a method of aligning a capillary needle 107, at least one electrode 1201, and the input to a mass spectrometer. The electrode is formed as an assembly of two separate chips (Fig. 2 208, 201) and forms an ionization device. Each chip (208, 201) is formed on an insulating plastic substrate. The first chip carries mechanical alignment features 109 for the capillary electrospray needle 107 together with at least one partial electrode (207). The second chip carries at least one partial electrode (210). The complete electrode is formed when the chips are assembled in a stacked configuration (Fig. 2). When the beam 1203 leaves the device it can then be directed into the mass spectrometer. |
