An image forming apparatus and a control method thereof are provided to minimize a delay time caused by color alignment, thereby improving a printing rate and improving the accuracy and reliability of the color alignment. An image forming apparatus(100) comprises a transfer unit(110), an image forming unit(120), a control unit(140), and a data storage unit(130). The transfer unit has a transfer belt for transferring a printing medium. The image forming unit fixes toner and forms a color image. The control unit controls the image forming unit to form a test image for the color alignment of the image forming unit on the transfer belt while images for plural printing media corresponding to a printing operation are formed. The data storage unit stores test data.
