A negative electrode active material is provided to ensure high capacities and good charge and discharge cycle characteristics by an interaction between reduced metal and carbon. A negative electrode active material for a lithium secondary battery includes a metal oxide-carbon composite material modified with a metal oxide, wherein the metal oxide is reduced into metal by intercalation of lithium ions during initial charging. A lithium secondary battery includes a negative electrode comprising the negative electrode active material, a positive electrode comprising a positive electrode active material capable of reversible intercalation/deintercalation of lithium, and an electrolyte.
