A negative electrode for a rechargeable lithium battery is provided to suppress an irreversible change of a crystal structure during charging and discharging, and to prevent the decomposition of an electrolyte. A negative electrode for a rechargeable lithium battery includes: a current collector; and a negative electrode mixture which is formed on the current collector and comprises a crystal structure holding agent and a negative electrode active material containing a lithium vanadium composite oxide. The crystal structure holding agent is an oxide comprising an element selected from the group comprising cerium, zirconium, iron, copper, and combinations thereof. The crystal structure holding agent is contained in an amount of 20wt% or less, based on the negative electrode mixture. |
