A digital broadcasting system and a data processing method are provided to improve receiving performance by performing the additional encoding of mobile service data and transmitting the encoded data. An M-VSB(Vestigial Side Band) pre-processor(202) performs the first coding of mobile service data, and forms a data group including a plurality of the encoded mobile service data packets. A multiplexer(203) multiplexes the mobile service data packets of the data group outputted from the M-VSB pre-processor and a main service data packet as a burst structure. An information former(204) inserts information for initializing a trellis encoder and time and frequency information for an SFN(Single Frequency Network) into a predetermined data packet among the multiplexed data packets. An RS(Reed Solomon) encoder(206) performs the second coding and the trellis coding of the output data packets of the multiplexer and the information former, generates data for initializing a memory of a trellis encoding unit in a start time of a known data string, and changes input data of the trellis encoding unit. A modifier and sync inserter(214) transmits the change data, changes information for the initialization as state information of the trellis encoding unit, generates identification information indicating a field synchronous insertion time, and transmits the generated identification signal to each transmitter.
