A DVD system having a function for changing a recording mode and a method for changing a recording mode during recording are provided to store the time a recording mode is changed in a memory when the recording mode change is asked while recording images in a DVD, in order to record the data of the image from the time, thereby changing the recording mode without data loss. A method for changing a recording mode in a DVD system comprises the steps of: starting recording of requested images in an optical disk(S202,S204); storing a DVD recording mode change time when the recording mode change is requested(S206); receiving the DVD recording mode change information and changing into the recording mode(S208,S210); and re-recording the image through a time shift function in the optical disk from the recording mode change time(S212,S214,S216).
