An apparatus for collecting sludge of a settling tank is provided to prevent a damage of the apparatus and improve collecting efficiency of sludge by controlling rotary speed of a motor of a driver and stopping the operation of the motor when the driver is overloaded. An apparatus for collecting sludge of a settling tank comprises a driver(150) including: a motor(M) that provides driving force for moving forward and backward a sludge collector which is installed in a settling tank, and on which a scraper is mounted; a signal rod including a short signal rod(151a) with a short length and a long signal rod(151b) with a long length projected from a rotary shaft(152) of the motor oppositely to each other; a speed signal sensor including a sensor(s1) for detecting the short signal rod and a sensor(s2) for detecting the long signal rod; load detecting sensors(s3,s4) for detecting a vertical movement of a frame(153) that supports the motor and outputting information on a moving width of the frame; and a control part for controlling a rotary speed of the motor such that the rotary speed is fast or slow according to a detected signal of the speed signal sensor, detecting a vertical moving width of the frame by detected signals of the load detecting sensors, and stopping the operation of the motor if the moving width exceeds a predetermined value. Further, the control part controls a rotation of the motor in order to make a rate of a forward movement become slower that of a backward movement.
