An image scanning apparatus is provided to place a light diffusion member toward the light illumination direction of the LED and to form a diffusion member which is thick near the sheet and which is thin far from the opposite in order to guide the maximum of the light illumination to be placed at the center of the scanning area. An image scanning apparatus comprises a plurality of LEDs(111) and a diffusion member(120). The LEDs illuminate light on a surface of a sheet(P). The diffusion member, placed between the LED and the sheet, diffuses the light facing the sheet surface. The diffusion member has different thicknesses with regard to scanning directions of the sheet. The thickness of the diffusion member is gradually thick toward the LED. A cylindrical lens is placed between the diffusion member and the sheet.
