An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) and a manufacturing method thereof are provided to form an active pattern on the upper portion of a gate electrode as an island shape and to adapt an etch stopper structure. A first substrate includes a pixel member and first and second pad members. Gate electrode and gate line are formed at the pixel member of the first substrate through a mask process at one time and an island shape of active pattern(124) is formed on the upper portion of the gate electrode at the same time. An insulating layer is formed on the first substrate. A portion of the insulating layer is removed so that the first and second contact holes are formed to expose the drain and source areas of the active pattern. An etch stopper(150) is formed between the source and drain areas. Source and drain electrodes(122,123) are formed and connected with the source and drain areas of the active pattern electrically. A data line is crossed with the gate line and defines a pixel area. A pixel electrode(118) is electrically connected to the drain electrode. The first and second substrates are bonded with each other.
