A color filter and a liquid crystal display device are provided to control a value of a phase difference in a thickness direction of red, green, and blue display pixels, thereby preventing coloring when observing in an inclined direction. A color filter comprises at least a red display pixel(3R), a green display pixel(3G), and a blue display pixel(3B) on a substrate(1). A value of a phase difference in a thickness direction of the red display pixel(RRth), the value of the phase difference in the thickness direction of the green display pixel(GRth), and the value of the phase difference in the thickness direction of the blue display pixel(BRth) satisfy the following formulas: I(RRth-BRth)I-I(GRth-BRth)I>=0; l(RRth-BRth)l-l(RRth-GRth)l>=0. The RRth, the GRth, and the BRth are obtained by firstly multiplying a thickness of the pixel by a value which is an average of an in-plane refractive index minus a refractive index of the thickness direction for each pixel, and secondly multiplying the resultant value by 1000.
