A red phosphor, and a method for preparing the red phosphor are provided to improve color purity and luminous efficiency and to obtain an emission wavelength of 650-750 nm. A red phosphor comprises aluminum oxide(Al2O3) as a matrix and chromium(Cr) as an activator and is represented by Al2O3: xCr, wherein 0.000003<=x<=0.3; and Cr is at least one selected from Cr^4+, Cr^3+ and Cr^2+. The red phosphor is prepared by mixing an oxide nanoparticle containing Al or organic and inorganic compound containing Al and a compound containing Cr with a solvent selected from ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, distilled water and water; drying the mixture in an oven at 80-300 deg.C for 2-4 hours; and sintering the dried one in a high purity alumina boat under the air or oxygen atmosphere at 500-1,750 deg.C for 0.5-16 hours. |
