A method and an apparatus for checking quality of an optical disk are provided to store a disk defect detected through quality check, using an RF(radio frequency) signal reflected from the optical disk in a memory, thereby referring to a defective area in further recording. A method for checking quality of an optical disk comprises the steps of: carrying out recording initialization of the disk inserted in an optical disk recording/reproducing device(502,504); testing defects of the optical disk, using an RF(radio frequency) signal reflected from the optical disk(506); storing defective area information on the optical disk in a memory when detecting defects in the optical disk(514); calculating/displaying recordable capacity except for the defective area of the optical disk(516); and reading the defective area information from the memory and recording data and data control information in the area except for the defective area(520).
