Polycyclic esters each having a cyano group and a lactone skeleton, as represented by the general formula (1): [wherein Ra is hydrogen, optionally halogenated C1-6 alkyl, or the like; R1 is halogeno, optionally halogenated C1-6 alkyl, or the like; m is the number of R1's; and n is the number of cyano groups, with the proviso that the CH2=C(Ra)COO-group may take any of endo and exo forms]. The polycyclic esters are useful as, for example, monomers capable of forming high-function polymers which are excellent in the solubility in organic solvents and are improved in hydrolyzability and/or the solubility in water after hydrolysis while retaining the stabilities such as chemical resistance.
