The exhaust gas cleaning method involves cooling exhaust gas of exhaust gas flow (2). The cooled exhaust gas is passed through an exhaust gas cleaning module (6), particularly a particle filter module (7). The heated exhaust gas is passed through another exhaust gas cleaning module (20), particularly a denitrating module. The heat energy is used by an energy transfer device (30) for heating the exhaust gas in the exhaust gas flow. The heat energy is withdrawn from the former exhaust gas cleaning module during cooling of the exhaust gas. An independent claim is also included for an exhaust gas cleaning system.
