A planar light source device is provided to improve the durability of the bonded portion against horizontal stress by forming protrusions and depressions in a region where frit is coated to bond upper and lower substrates to each other. A planar light source device(10) includes a first substrate(101), a second substrate(103), a frit(102), first electrodes(107a,109a), and second electrodes(107b,109b). The second substrate is located at a distance from the first substrate and forms a discharge region. The frit is placed between the edges of the first and second substrates to bond the first and second substrates to each other and seal up the discharge region. The first electrodes are formed on the first substrate and the second electrodes are formed on the second substrate. At least part of the edges of the first and second substrates, which come into contact with the frit, includes protrusions and depressions.
