<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separator for a lithium secondary battery capable of minimizing an internal short circuit of the lithium secondary battery, and to provide the lithium secondary battery enhancing heat stability by utilizing the separator for the lithium secondary battery. <P>SOLUTION: In the separator for the lithium secondary battery, maximum thermal shrinkage in the longitudinal direction and that in the lateral direction of the separator are made 0-30%, and the ratio of the maximum thermal shrinkage in the longitudinal direction to that in the lateral direction is made 0.8-1.3.
