PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader designed so that when a book document set on a document table platen glass is read, image information can be highly accurately read without degrading image quality, and thereby a high quality image can be obtained and to reduce manufacturing cost low. SOLUTION: The first and second platen glasses 12a and 12b (first and second flat plates) composing a document table member can be switched from a mountain fold position to a flat position, and vise versa. The movement is synchronized with the opening or closing of the document table cover (pressure plate cover) 4. The document table cover 4 is opened, the first and second platen glasses 12a and 12b are formed into a mountain fold in synchronization with the opening motion, the book margin of the book document 11 is made to coincide with the mountain fold so as to face inside, and thus, a book document 11 can be automatically positioned. By closing the document table cover 4, the first and second platen glasses 12a and 12b are made flat in synchronization with the closing. Consequently, the document table cover 4 presses the book document 11, and then image information is read. Accordingly, high quality image free from nonuniform image can be obtained.
