PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a biological desulfurization apparatus and a biological desulfurization process keeping the methane/oxygen ratio within a safe range to realize a safe treatment by introducing an oxygen-containing gas such as air into a treatment gas and immediately mixing and diffusing the oxygen-containing gas. SOLUTION: The biological desulfurization apparatus has a biological desulfurization column 1 provided with a filler 10 supporting aerobic sulfur-oxidizing bacteria in the column and a treatment gas introducing line 11 to introduce a treatment gas at least containing methane gas and hydrogen sulfide to the lower part of the column, and the hydrogen sulfide is biologically oxidized by introducing the treatment gas and the oxygen-containing gas to effect the biological desulfurization. The concentration of hydrogen sulfide in the treatment gas is≥0.5 vol.%, the column has one or more injection parts to inject the oxygen-containing gas in an amount not less than the stoichiometrically necessary amount for the oxidation of the hydrogen sulfide and≤3 times the stoichiometrically necessary amount, and the column has a static mixer near the downstream side of the injection part.
