Pre-exposure and curing of a photo-sensitive material for an optical data storage is provided to direct first and second light beams toward a holographic storage medium, using a spatial light modulator, in order to simplify the composition of an optical storage medium and layout of the pickup. An apparatus(1) for writing in a holographic storage medium(10) includes a first light source(2) for emitting first light beams(7,8), a second light source(14) for emitting a second light beam(15), and a spatial light modulator. The spatial light modulator, which switches between at least two states to modulate at least a part of the first light beam, is arranged to direct the first light beam toward a holographic storage medium in a first state and to direct the second light beam toward the holographic storage medium in a second state.
