PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which is capable of reading an image on a sheet without causing image defects due to dusts. SOLUTION: A detection means detects that dust is stuck on transparent reading plates 116, 130 through which a sheet is passed, disposed at image reading positions, respectively, of a first image reading section 101 for detecting an image on a first side of the sheet and a second image reading section 102 for reading an image on a second side of the sheet. A control means which controls reading operations of the first and second image reading sections 101, 102, then controls to read the image on the sheet using the image reading section with no dust stuck on the reading plate 116, 130 between the first and second image reading sections 101, 102 when the detection means detects that the dust is stuck on the reading plate.
