PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automated apparatus for handling and preparing contact lenses for inspection and packaging. SOLUTION: The apparatus for degassing deionized water for use in inspecting and packaging contact lenses includes (a) a vacuum chamber; (b) a plurality of gas permeable tubes mounted in the vacuum chamber for continuously receiving deionized water for degassing; (c) a means for generating a pressure differential to cause the deionized water to flow through the gas permeable tubes; (d) a manifold for distributing the degassed and deionized water to a plurality of distribution points; and (e) at least one precision metering pump for metering less than 1 ml of degassed and deionized water at each one of the distribution points.
