PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rear projection type image display apparatus which has improved efficiency in adjustment of a reflecting mirror and improved facilitation of the adjustment thereof and restrains pin distortion of a projected image, and to provide an image distortion correction method for the rear projection type image display apparatus. SOLUTION: The rear projection type image display apparatus (rear projector 1) changes the optical path of image light L projected from a projection unit 600 by a reflection mirror 200, and projects images onto a screen 700 from rear. The rear projection type image display apparatus includes an image distortion correcting mechanism. The image distortion correcting mechanism has: a housing (rear face housing 530) having an approximately trapezoidal opening 531; support parts for supporting the reflecting mirror 200 near the four corners of the opening 531 of the rear face housing 530; and adjusting section for adjusting deflection of the reflecting mirror 200 near the gravity center of the reflecting mirror 200.
