PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel injection device improved in the energy efficiency of an engine by reducing the driving energy of a high pressure fuel pump by the suppression of the useful energy discharge of high pressure fuel by managing high pressure pumps in accordance with an engine load, and a method of operating the engine. SOLUTION: A fuel injection device for an engine is equipped with a plurality of high pressure fuel pumps in which discharge timing is controlled by a solenoid valve to pressure-feed fuel to a common rail and composed to jet high pressure fuel in the common rail into a cylinder through a fuel injection valve, includes a controller for making some of a plurality of high pressure fuel pumps inoperative by opening a plunger chamber in the high pressure fuel pump to an oil supply/discharge side by the operation of solenoid valves in the some of the pumps at a low/medium fuel injection amount when a fuel injection amount of an engine is lower than a set value.
