PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To propose a printer which undergoes a malfunction detecting action only in the case where the detecting of the mounted-parts malfunction is required. SOLUTION: A rolled-paper printer 1 is equipped with a paper detector 40 for detecting whether or not a recording paper 11a has been pulled out along with the conveyance path, a malfunction detection means 60 which performs the malfunction detecting action for detecting the malfunction of the paper detector 40. The malfunction detecting means 60 is provided by a malfunction detecting program 61 being executed in a control part 30. The control part 30 is provided with a determination means 63 for determining whether the malfunction detection of the paper detector 40 is required from the serial number 66 and an execution control means 62 for forbidding or permitting the execution of the malfunction detecting program 61. Since the execution control means 62 permits the execution of the malfunction detecting program 61 only for the rolled-paper printer 1 which is determined to be required for detecting the malfunction by the determination means 63, the malfunction detecting action is not performed for the rolled-paper printer 1 which is not required for detecting the malfunction.
