PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating method for forming a coating film having excellent initial drying property, film forming property, durability and adhesiveness on a base material having an organic coating film. SOLUTION: In the coating method, a water base paint containing (A) a synthetic resin emulsion having a reactive functional group, (B) a solvent having≥7.5 (cal/cm<SP>3</SP>)<SP>1/2</SP>and≤9.5 (cal/cm<SP>3</SP>)<SP>1/2</SP>solubility parameter, <3.0 g/100g solubility in water and≥250°C boiling point and (C) a water soluble compound having a reactive functional group reactive with the reactive functional group of (A) is applied on the base material having the organic coating film.
