The method involves operating internal combustion engine to a time point T1 in a throttle cutoff phase. The internal combustion engine is operated in a phase with a grease mixture and from the time point T2 up to a time point T3 in a regulated phase with a stoichiometric motorized reference lambda value with a meager mixture after completing the phase for a time interval T2-T1. The initiation of the throttle cutoff phase depending upon the determination of the condition value is determined and for the case of a determination the condition value is determined. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining condition value of catalyzer arranged in exhaust gas unit.
