The membrane electrode arrangement (12) has first and second electrodes (28,30) and a solid polymer electrolyte membrane (26) arranged between the first and second electrodes. The membrane electrode arrangement has an essentially rectangular overall shape and at least one corner of the membrane electrode arrangement has an outward extension.
