A device and a method for retrieving a document are provided to efficiently display a summary and contents of the documents, which include images matched with image search conditions, in a retrieval result list, and enable a user to search the desired document quickly in the retrieval result list including lots of documents and noise results. A document retrieval unit(213) retrieves document data including images matched with an inputted retrieval condition. A retrieval result list display unit displays a list of the document data matched with the retrieval condition in a display unit based on the retrieval result of the document retrieval unit. A thumbnail display unit displays a first thumbnail image related to a page or an image element matched with the retrieval condition, and a second thumbnail image related to other pages or image elements forming the document data including the matched page or image element in the list displayed by the retrieval result list display unit. The thumbnail display unit arranges the second thumbnail image before or after the first thumbnail image based on arrangement order of the pages or the image elements. An index creator(211) creates index records which can be used as retrieval keys to promptly to retrieve documents records including similar images. |
