A character input device for a vehicle is provided to enable a user to input characters without any learning before use by using a touch pad equipped with a main detection area and enable the user to input the character in various positions without checking the characters one by one by occupying a smaller space than a jog shuttle. A touch pad detects a touch of a finger. A rectangular insulation guide area(302) is engraved in the touch pad and is operated as a guide line. A general detection area(304) is formed between the insulation guide areas, and a plurality of main detection areas(303) are formed to important positions for inputting characters in the general detection area. A memory maps the characters through the touch of the main detection area. An operation unit forms the character by receiving the touch of the main detection area. The general detection guide area is formed in vertical, horizontal, and diagonal directions crossing the center of the rectangular insulation guide area. The main detection area is formed close to each side of a plurality of triangle insulation guide areas formed to the inside of the rectangular insulation guide area.
