PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic document feeder designed so that it is unnecessary that a user jogs documents on the cover of a conveyance section. SOLUTION: The automatic document feeder 10 includes: a separate roller attached to a drive shaft; a swing arm supported so as to be swingable around the axis of the drive shaft; a pickup roller pivotally supported by the swing end of the swing arm; a power transmitting means for transmitting the rotating force of the drive shaft to the pickup roller; a friction transmitting means for transmitting the rotating force of the drive shaft to the swing arm by the frictional action; and a conveyance section cover 22 covering them from above. By the swing of the swing arm, when feeding a document to a document feed tray 11, the pickup roller moves downward, and the document is conveyed. By the swing of the swing arm when completing the document conveyance, the pickup roller is moved upward and retracted.
