PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for improving color quality in production of polyoxyalkylene glycol dialkyl ether in the presence of atmospheric oxygen. SOLUTION: A method for converting free hydroxy of polyoxyalkylene glycol and/or polyoxyalkylene glycol monoether is provided, wherein at least one polyoxyalkylene glycol or at least one polyoxyalkylene glycol monoether is reacted with a base, and then the resultant is alkylated or acylated with a halohydrocarbon or an acid halide in the presence of a reductant, which alkylation or acylation reaction is performed in the presence of atmospheric oxygen.
