PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lubricant applying unit which stably applies a lubricant with ease while securing high efficiency of use of the lubricant, a cleaning unit, an image forming apparatus and an image forming method. SOLUTION: The lubricant applying unit has a lubricant 82 and an applying member 83 for applying the lubricant 82 onto an image carrier by rotation in a predetermined direction C1, wherein the lubricant 82 has angular parts 82a, 82b facing the applying member 83 and at least the angular part 82a on an upstream side in the predetermined direction C1, that is, the angular part 82a on a side closer to the applying member 83 in the predetermined direction C1 has a curved surface shape of convexity toward the applying member 83.
