A catalyst for polymerizing ethylene comprises TiCl4 (1) and the product obtained by preheating in the presence of an inert organic solvent and preferably in presence of ethylene, AlCl3 (2) with an alkali metal hydride (3), e.g. LiH. The molecular ratio (3): (2) is below 3:1 and that of (2):(1) is 20-250:1. The invention comprises also polyethylene, mean MW between 400,000 and 800,000, Vicat softening point between 135 DEG and 145 DEG C., Brinell hardness between 0,22 and 0,26 and tensile strength between 280 and 300 kg./cm.2.
