A fuel injector for an internal combustion engine comprises at least a housing (2), a valve seat (21), a valve spindle (16), an atomizer (5), and a cut-off element (27). The cut-off element is carried by a shaft on the valve spindle and comprises a first cylindrical section (28) located in the central bore (22) of the atomizer to close inlet openings of some of the nozzle bores (31), when the valve spindle is in the closed position against the valve seat. The first cylindrical section has at least one central flow passage (34) for supplying fuel to inlet openings of at least some of the nozzle bores, when the valve spindle is in the open position. The inlet openings of the nozzle bores in the central bore of the atomizer are arranged in a first row (A) and in a second row (B). The cut-off element has a second cylindrical section for closing off the second row of inlet openings when the valve spindle is closed.
