<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for separating substances, in each of which a composite material such as a waste electric wire or a mixture such as waste oil is treated and separated into a useful material and an unnecessary material. <P>SOLUTION: The apparatus 1 for separating substances, which is used for treating the composite material such as the waste electric wire or the mixture such as waste oil, is provided with a housing tank 2 and a superheated steam generating unit (a superheated steam generating means) 3. The superheated steam generated in the superheated steam generating unit 3 is sent to a superheated steam introduction part 53 and jetted from a plurality of superheated steam introduction pipelines 56 toward the composite material to be treated. When the composite material contains a metal and thermoplastic plastic or synthetic rubber like the waste electric wire, the thermoplastic plastic or synthetic rubber in the composite material is pyrolyzed and gasified by the action of superheated steam.
