PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a sintered friction material that is favorable in terms of the environmental conservation because of containing no chemical substances designated by the PRTR law and has excellent high-temperature characteristics, reduces the amount of wear of mating member and has excellent brake performances by including reducing iron powder, cast iron powder and fine iron powder as main components. SOLUTION: The sintered friction material comprises reducing iron powder having a high melting point and being relatively soft, cast iron powder that has a melting point lower than that of the reducing iron powder and yet is relatively hard by existence of cementite and fine iron powder as main components instead of a conventional friction material consisting essentially of copper powder. The sintered friction material obtained is expected to have improved heat resistance/abrasion resistance/aggressiveness to a mating member by the reducing iron powder and an improved coefficient of friction by the cast iron powder, has improved sintering properties and is dense and relatively soft by the fine iron powder. Consequently, contact properties with a mating member are improved and a rise in temperature and an uneven abrasion by a local part contact are controlled to improve a coefficient of friction/abrasion resistance.
