PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem of causing jamming and separation failure of paper sheets because two paper sheets abutting on a pickup roller are simultaneously delivered when the paper sheets of different sizes are mixedly supplied. SOLUTION: This paper sheet separating mechanism comprises the pickup roller 1, a delivery roller 2 and a separating roller 3, wherein paper sheet detectors each with three right, center and left sensors arranged in a line in a perpendicular direction to the conveying direction A of the paper sheets 10 are provided in a plurality of rows, and when the sequence of the shading states of the sensors 7 of the paper sheet detector in the first row are different from that of the sensors 8 of the paper sheet detector in the second row, the paper sheets 10 are determined to be abnormal and returned to a paper sheet supply port 9.
