PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for determining combustion characteristics for each cylinder of an internal combustion engine more advantageously in cost than conventional technology. SOLUTION: In a method for determining combustion characteristics (ϕ<SB>VL</SB>, T) for each cylinder of the internal combustion engine based on variables indicating crankshaft rotation speed n, especially signal of a crankshaft transmitter or a camshaft transmitter, the combustion characteristics for each cylinder include at least either of crankshaft torque T or combustion positionϕ<SB>VL</SB>of at least one cylinder.
