A closed caption reproducing device is provided to decode and store a caption signal to control and suspend the reproduction rate of the caption signal, thereby reproducing a closed caption in a desired method. A caption decoder(10) detects a caption signal from an inputted video signal and generates character data corresponding to the detected caption signal. A buffer(30) stores the character data generated in the caption decoder. A key input unit(60) has a caption timing key(61~64) for selecting the output timing of the caption signal to generate a key signal by the input of the caption timing key. A microcomputer(20) outputs a control signal to the caption decoder, detects the caption signal from the video signal, and generates the character data if the caption timing key of the key input unit is inputted, and outputs a timing control signal by the caption timing key, controls the processing rate of the character data by the caption timing key, and outputs a character signal. A caption reproducing unit(40) controls the processing rate of the character data stored in the buffer in response to the timing control signal to generate the character signal. A mixer unit mixes the character signal outputted from the caption reproducing unit with the video signal and outputs the mixed signal. Further, the caption timing key contains a fast regenerating key and a slow regenerating key.
