PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lift characteristic detector accurately detecting a lift characteristic of an engine valve, in a variable valve gear of an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: This lift characteristic detector 10 is provided with: a movable part 20 arranged on an output-side rocking member 114 rocking with an input-side rocking member 112 by rotation of a valve cam 108, entering into a predetermined detection region D by rocking in a forward direction X along with the output-side rocking member 114 at an arbitrary relative angleθ, and exiting from the detection region D by rocking in a backward direction Y along with the output-side rocking member 114; and a detection part 30 fixed to the internal combustion engine, and detecting the maximum lift amount as a lift characteristic based on a time difference between the entry time of the movable part 20 into the detection region D and the exit time from the detection region D.
