A base material is produced by quenching a steel material, which contains not less than 0.3 wt% but not more than 2.7 wt% of carbon and not more than 13 wt% of chromium, while being added with at least one of not less than 0.5 wt% but not more than 3 wt% of molybdenum, not less than 0.1 wt% but not more than 5 wt% of vanadium and not less than 1 wt% but not more than 7 wt% of tungsten, and then tempering the quenched steel material at a temperature not less than 400°C but not more than 650°C. A surface coating layer composed of an amorphous Ni-P alloy is formed on the surface of the base material, and the surface coating layer is subjected to a heat treatment, thereby being converted into an eutectic structure of Ni and Ni<SUB>3</SUB>P. Consequently, shape of a mold can be maintained with high precision by preventing occurrence of cracks in the surface coating layer at molding temperatures, while preventing plastic deformation of the mold. |
