A method of detecting failure of a high voltage relay for an automobile is provided to classify failures of an initial charge relay and of a main relay in accordance with difference in voltages between a high voltage battery and an inverter capacitor in a failure diagnosis circuit, thereby avoiding accidents while driving. A method of detecting failure of a high voltage relay for an automobile comprises the steps of: discriminating if a start key is on and a high voltage relay is on, and if so, detecting contact welding of a relay; detecting contact welding of an initial charge relay; if contact welding of the relay is not detected, executing open-circuit diagnosis sequence while turning on the initial charge relay and detecting open-circuit failure of the initial charge relay; if open-circuit failure of the initial charge relay is not detected, turning on a main relay and detecting open-circuit failure of the main relay; and if open-circuit failure of the main relay is not detected, turning off the initial charge relay.
