PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color display element fabricated by superposing a plurality of display elements on one another, a structure which is especially suitable for a thin, sheet-shaped display element such as a color electronic paper, and its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: The display element includes a first substrate with a first electrode disposed thereon, a second substrate with a second electrode disposed thereon, and a coloring layer disposed between the substrates, and is characterized by superposing a first mark arranged on the first substrate and a second mark arranged on the second substrate, and constructing a positioning mark for aligning the substrates.
