PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve sheet discharging productivity by using a gripper for carrying sheets along their moving track corresponding to a long/short sheet size when using a nip means for gripping the sheets at their front ends and carrying them from a sheet discharge port to the front end of a tray. SOLUTION: This sheet stacking device comprises the sheet discharge port 23 out of which the sheets are carried in sequence, a tray means 25 arranged on the downstream side of the sheet discharge port, and a sheet transfer means 27 for transferring the sheets from the sheet discharge port to the front end of the tray. The sheet transfer means has the nip means 28 for holding the sheets at their front ends, and a looped belt means 29 to be moved from the sheet discharge port along a sheet discharging direction. The belt means consists of a first belt means 29A for transferring short sheets of predetermined length or smaller from the sheet discharge port and a second belt means 29B for transferring long sheets of predetermined length or greater therefrom. A driving means M2 for each belt means makes the nip means for the belt means on the non-operation side retreat at a retreat position outside a sheet transfer track of the belt means on the operation side with the selective operation of the first or second belt means.
