<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-performance encoder and decoder for concatenated zigzag codes. <P>SOLUTION: An encoder 100 comprises a segmenter 110 for segmenting an input information word into a plurality of coded segments and an encoder core 120 for calculating a redundancy bit for a current segment using a redundancy bit of an earlier segment than the current segment in the order. An interleaver 130 uses first and second interleaving rules, obtained by conducting a series of intermediate sub-steps, to obtain first and second interleaved versions. A codeword constructor 140 uses a set of first and second redundancy bits calculated from the first and second interleaved versions by the input information word and the encoder core 120 to generate an output codeword.
