A computer readable media includes instructions for retrieving a list of references to user interface controls included in a user interface. For each user interface control, information associated with the font specified for the control is retrieved. Information associated with the control itself, for example, the size of a text area associated with the control is then retrieved. The string to be drawn in the control's text area is then retrieved, and the information associated with the font is sued to determine the required size of the text area. The actual size of the control's text are is compared with the size of the text area required for the current string. If the actual size is less than the required size, the text is truncated. If the actual size is greater than the required size, the text is not truncated.
