摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector which has high contrast and is excellent in evenness of luminance. <P>SOLUTION: The projector comprises: a light source 12; and liquid crystal light valves 15 to 17 that modulate light emitted from the light source 12, wherein the liquid crystal light valve 15 includes: a liquid crystal panel 15c of vertical alignment mode having a liquid crystal layer pinched between a pair of substrates; a pair of polarizing plates 15b, 15d disposed so as to hold the liquid crystal panel 15c therebetween; a first retardation plate 15a which is arranged between a pair of polarizing plates 15b, 15d and compensates retardation of at least the liquid crystal panel 15c; and a second retardation plate 15e which is arranged between the pair of polarizing plates 15b, 15d and compensates the retardation of at least the pair of polarizing plates 15b, 15d. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
