PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To record a video signal in a recording medium so as to reproduce the original color possessed by the recorded video signal as it is in a reproduction apparatus with high-fidelity.

SOLUTION: A user designates either a sRGB color space or an extended sRGB color space as a color space of the video signal to be recorded. A signal processor 131 generates the video signal (luminance signal Y and color-difference signal Cb/Cr) corresponding to the designated color space. An encoding/decoding portion 132 data-compresses the video signal based on the MPEG4-AVC Standard and generates a compressed video signal to be recorded in the recording medium 135. A CPU 121 generates a color space identifier including information to show the color space which the user has designated and includes a SEI NAL unit storing the color space identifier in an access unit including a SPS NAL unit in the compressed video signal. The color space identifier having the information of the color space of the video signal is added to the video signal to be recorded in the recording medium 135.
